Our Heritage
A rich history of service, dedication, and maritime excellence
The Beginning (1887-1956)
The origin of the Nigerian Navy can be traced to the Marine Department of the Royal Navy established in 1887 as a quasi-military organization. This department combined the duties of what would become the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority, and the Nigerian Navy. Elements participated in military operations against German forces in Cameroun during World War I (1914-1918).
Formation & Early Years (1956-1964)
On June 1, 1956, the Naval Defence Force (NDF) commenced operations with 11 assorted ships and craft inherited from the colonial Marine Department. On May 1, 1958, it was re-designated as the Royal Nigerian Navy (RNN). When Nigeria became a republic in 1963, the prefix "Royal" was dropped, and the modern Nigerian Navy was formally established through the Act of Parliament No. 21 of 1964.
Modern Era (1999-Present)
The 1999 Constitution and the National Defence Policy 2006 expanded NN roles to cover the full spectrum of military, policing, and diplomatic functions of a modern navy. Today, the Nigerian Navy is a multi-mission maritime force working in synergy with other security agencies to protect Nigeria's maritime domain.
